Art and Writing Lessons for K-12

My teaching philosophy involves creating a classroom, with students, that fosters an awareness of cross-curriculum learning. I believe in promoting an appreciation for literature that expresses universal themes of childhood. By providing opportunities for group collaboration, students are encouraged to achieve an understanding of individual and collective experiences. While showing enthusiasm for assignments related to close reading, critical thinking, and multi-modal writing - students are encouraged to develop research skills. When fostering life-long learning - kindness, wellness, and social responsibility are at the forefront of class discussions. As we facilitate an exchange of ideas, we have an understanding of the benefits of using technology for effective communication. Furthermore, as we create a safe environment for the sharing of ideas, we recognize shifts in emotional stance and respond with compassion. As we read, interpret, analyze, research and write - we work together to create a safe and nurturing environment to foster academic excellence.

Morning Rituals for a Successful Day

Teaching K-8 Art from 8:00 - 4:00 and College Art History from 7:00 - 9:00 allows me to use my creative and critical thinking skills.

Organizing my week, in order to create life-work balance, can be exciting and thought provoking.

One way to stay stress-free is to use a planner that divides the day into categories. Creating healthy routines makes life more manageable and allows for more free time.

As a Gen-Xer, I definitely value my free time to relax, wonder, and live!

My school planner stays at school, and my home planner stays at home. This method allows me to stay present and productive.

Creating Lesson Plans for K-12 Teachers

Teaching multiple grades can be a challenge and an adventure. Years ago, I taught PK-12 Art and High School English. Currently, I teach K-8 Art.

Organizing nine different classes, with multiple sections, requires a lot of creativity and critical thinking.

One way to stay stress-free is to have all your lessons in one place. I have created a list of resources for grades PK-12.

In my TPT Store Creativity in Motion, you can search using the tabs: Grade, Subject, Price, Standard, and Format.  You can also use the All Filters tab. Most of my resources include a print and digital format. Many of my items are FREE.

Professional Growth for Visual Arts Teachers

Teaching in a public school, or a private school, requires professional growth opportunities throughout the school year and the summer.

I enjoy professional development days during the school year. Some of my favorites activities are reading books provided by the school district.

During the summer, I enjoy reading books of my choice from the public library.

Additionally, I enjoy informal and formal conversations with teachers and artists.

Summer is a great time for coffee talks and informational interviews. It is fun to network and learn from other professionals.

After - School Reflections

Teaching is a rewarding profession that requires a lot of time and energy. If you teach multiple grade levels, and subjects, you are constantly shifting gears.

One strategy that has worked for me, is to color code my lesson plans. For each grade level, I use a different colored pen. This visual cue reminds me to slow down and adjust my teaching style.

At the end of the school day, I take time to pause and reflect on the day's blessings and challenges.

In order to be productive at home, and follow my personal self-care routines, it is essential that I reflect while at school and not at home.
